Unique fort
Significant monuments
The Old Fortress is located at the east side of Corfu’s port. It was built during the Byzantine Empire but reinforced at first by the Venetians and later by the English and the Greek.
It is a unique fort complex in the Ionian Islands. The entrance is at Spianada. Previously it consisted of a moat with a movable bridge which has now been replaced by a metal bridge connecting the fortress to the city.
The most significant monuments in the fortress are the following: the main gate, the mainland and sea towers, the church of Agios Georgios, the ‘romantic’ temple, the prisons, the English barracks. The public library and the Byzantine collection are housed in the facilities of the fortress. Various cultural events take place in the outdoor spaces.
