The majority of the museum’s impressive exhibits is from the Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic and Roman Age and was mainly found during excavations in archaeological sites in Corfu and Epirus.
The Museum of Asian Art includes excellent collections from Asian countries. The building has a long and significant history since it served as the headquarters of the English Staff, the seat of the Ionian Senate and also the summer house of the Greek royal family. The majority of exhibits are donations from highly respected Greek citizens, the municipality of Corfu and the National Archaeological Museum.
The Museum is housed at the Church of Panagia Antivouniotissa which is a wonderful and well preserved church built in the 15th century.
It includes furniture and heirlooms of that time and personal items of Ioannis Kapodistrias. It was built on a plot belonging to the family property of Ioannis Kapodistrias, the first Governor of Greece.
The Museum is a tribute to the life of the country’s national poet, who wrote the ‘Ymnos is tin Eleftherian’ (Hymn to Freedom), which two first verses became the national anthem of Greece. It includes furniture, portraits, photos and personal items of Dionysios Solomos.
